wet weather is causing problems across the washington area. downed trees and flooding concerns have made it a busy day for emergency responders.

good saturday, i'm craig melvin. there's already been some flooding and we could see more. chuck bell standing in the storm center with more on this. >> yes, indeed. more rain on the way. still any more rain will add insult to injury. you can see the heaviest of the rains lifting out of northern maryland into southern pennsylvania. here is a look at live doppler. up along the blue ridge light to moderate rains to winchester and front royal. no major problems. there are flood warnings along the major creeks and streams. the potomac river is under a flood warning. potomac and little falls will be cresting monday afternoon. that will be a moderate flood there. in martinsburg, cresting about three feet above flood stage the

moderate category 7:00 monday. rainfall totals around the area, one to two inches of rain. both at washington international airport, almost three inches of rain today, 2.5 in columbia, almost 2.0 in the blue ridge. flood potential does stay high through tomorrow, at least. there is drying out potential coming our way. >> people in low-lying areas particularly are keeping an eye on rising creeks and rivers. rising waters caused flooding and high winds toppled trees. derrick ward surveyshe damage. >> reporter: falling trees and rising waters. in old town, alexandria, low roads are prone to flooding. not much time to take in the scene richlt holly was givening preparing to keep the water out.

>> it might be bad. it's supposed to get worse this afternoon and this evening. trying to prepare. >> reporter: over the years potomac has been many things to many people. especially when it overflows into banks like here in alexandria. how cool is it to skip a rock almost across prince street? jennifer was headed for our job where she manages a river boat. >> we are not running today. >> reporter: you would think a boat would not have problems on high water. >> with the debris floating in the water, we deem it unsafe today. the biggest concern are the passengers and our crew. >> reporter: there are concerns for sunday for alexandria's emergency management coordinator. >> we don't expect major problems in terms of safety or property damage. we are prepared for that. they are ready to go in this area today. we have shut down certain

low-lying facilities. >> higher than usual water levels are expected up and down the potomac, preparing for the worst while hoping for the best. derrick ward, news4. the same storm system bringing rain to the d.c. area is causing major problems across much of the northeast. the storm is pounding new jersey and new york. the storm is causing some flooding in neighborhoods and streets in those areas. wind gusts have reached up to 50 miles per hour, making walking in times square very difficult. three montgomery county volunteer firefighters have been arrested. they are accused of trying to steal expensive equipment from a fire warehouse. the 17-year-olds were arrested yesterday on dover road in rockville. darcy spencer has that story. >> reporter: three rockville firefighters have been charged with burglary and theft after they were caught inside the montgomery county fire services warehouse on dover road early

friday morning. authorities say the teens, who are all 17 years old, gathered fire and rescue equipment near the door with apparent intentions to steal the items. >> reporter: just after mid it in we were alerted to a motion entry alarm. they notified rockville city police. rockville city police responded and found the three juveniles in the facility. >> reporter: among the three items, biosuits, radio and charger, medical evacuation bag and repelling gear and tools. items were found stacked near an exit door of the warehouse. officials say one of the teens confessed to obtaining a set of keys at another fire station. >> rockville fire department immediately suspended the three members from participation in their department. notified the office of the fire chief who has been working with the volunteer fire department to help with the process through the investigation and disciplinary process. >> reporter: that's not all.

nine more rockville volunteer firefighters are being disciplined for apparently entering the recreation room in rockville after it closed some time tuesday night. the rec room has pool tables and ping pong tables. those involved are juveniles and adults. they have all been suspended, as well. >> this is disappointing. when this occurs, it is a black eye to the fire service. we are all working together to resolve this situation. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4. >> reporter: fire officials say it will have no impact on services throughout the county. the rockville station has 150 volunteers. the crew of the usns "comfort" is home fromhaiti. it returned late this afternoon. members of the hospital ship's crew are now being bussed to bethesda naval and medical center.

the crew was treating victims of the devastating earthquake that rocked haiti on january 12th. we'll have more on "the comft's" return at news4 at 11:00. >>. >> senate majority leader harry reid's wife is out of intensive care tonight. she was in a serious car cash near lorton, virginia, thursday. she broke her neck and back. she was not paralyzed though. a spokesman says mrs. reid was upgraded to good condition today. their adult daughter has already been released from the hospital. when we come back from this broadcast, a suicide squad detonated bombs in afghanistan killing at least 30 people. a second american woman is being held in connection with the alleged plot to kill a swedish cartoonist.

afghanistan in kandahar. a team of suicide bombers were targeting a prison, police headquarters and at least two other locations. the main target was the prison though. the government official in afghanistan said the bombers were attempting to free people from the prison. however, that same prison had been reenforced after a similar attack in 2008 and blew the gates open, allowing hundreds of criminals to escape. today, no prisoners got away. a second american woman has been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to kill a swedish cartoonist. the cartoonist had drawn a picture depicting the head of the prophet muhammad on a dog's body. jamie polin ramirez was one of seven people arrested in ireland this week. u.s. authorities unsealed terror charges against a american woman named colleen la rose in pennsylvania who went by the name jihad jane and tried to recruit others online to kill that cartoonist. at this point, it is not clear

whether paula ramirez might face terror charges. when a guy tried to rob a 91-year-old woman on long island, new york, he got more than he expected. florence was working the counter when man walked in and grabbed cash from the register. there is surveillance video. thee tried to grab the robber with her own hands. he punched her and took of the great grandmother was shaken, but was not seriously hurt. she is mad that she didn't do more to stop it. people who know her aren't surprised. >> she is spunky. she's got a lot of spunk. >> she takes nothing from nobody. >> he was lucky she didn't hit him. >> i could have hit him with that because it was right there i could have closed his hand in the drawer. >> she told police she has only would request, if they catch that guy, she wants to slap him. when we come back tonight, chuck will join us with another check on this wet weather.

spring. the governor played traditional irish music for the folks. along with singing, the governor played several musical instruments there. meteorologist chuck bell joining us now. chuck bell is a man of many talents. you played an instrument in college. >> i played trumpet all what it through high school and most of college. i wouldn't say i was good at it, but i was there. >> you showed up and got the t-shirt. >> i played the right notes at the right time. outside, cloudy skies are in place. the heaviest of the rains are now behind us. that is welcome news. on top of our already-saturated soil, any more rain will only exacerbate our flooding problems that we have across the area. high temperature in washington today made it up to 55 degrees after a 48 degree low. currently 52 degrees. north wind at only five miles per hour. was it windy early this morning. peak gusts at national airport

before sunrise almost 40 miles per hour. national one of the lowest rainfall amounts for the day, only 0.5 inch of rain. live doppler radar shows the rain showers from blue ridge to winchester down to front royal. even a few sprinkles here in northern parts of fairfax county and virginia. the heaviest of the rains now are lifting up to our north into southern pennsylvania. you can see on regional doppler a dry slot down across central virginia. light rain showers for the next several hours. as i pan north to philadelphia, new york and southern new england, look at that slog of heavy moisture coming off the atlantic ocean going across pennsylvania. this is going to be the places where we see the worst with of the flooding is going to be central pennsylvania, northern new jersey into portions of new england. for us in the immediate future, more showers across southern virginia, northernmost north carolina, we'll keep an eye on those. those aren't as heavy as heading into pennsylvania. you can see flood watches and

flood warnings go now from extreme southern maine down to the gulf coast. an enormous amount of moisture to deal with and complicated series of low pressure centers now. first one is bringing that heavy push of moisture into eastern pennsylvania. there is another area of low pressure back out to the west. we have to get all these areas of low pressure beyond us into the open waters of the western atlantic before our weather starts to improve. here you can see on futurecast model that first area of low pressure starting to become the more dominant offshore. that northeast wind is not going to be our friend tomorrow or monday, keeping the clouds in place and rain showers, a part of the forecast through much time on monday, at least, maybe into monday afternoon, as well. gradually by monday night rains taper off. we'll get a little sunshine back by tuesday and wednesday. for this evening, flood warnings are up. never drive over a water-covered road. don't let your kids play near fast-moving water. temperatures will drop only a few degrees into the upper 40s. mid to upper 40s tomorrow

morning. more rain likely in the morning. no more of the real heavy rains, but again, on saturated ground with most of the local creeks and streams and rivers at or above flood stage. it's only going to make the problems worse. rain will slowly start to taper off tomorrow evening, finally ending on monday. all-important seven-day forecast, 60% chance of showerery weather tomorrow. 30% coming to an end monday. drier weather returns tuesday and wednesday with highs near 60. into the 60s we will go and dry thursday, friday and saturday, as well. >> something to look forward to at least. hoyas rolled over marquette. they are hot, hot, hot. meanwhile, terps, not, not, not. what happened to maryland?
